Know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em

I downloaded and played Candy Crush because of Nicole’s recommendation.

I downloaded and played Flappy Bird because of Winston’s recommendation.

I downloaded and played Hill Climb because it looked fun.

I’m done with all three.

The same thing happened with each game. There is a learning curve where you do terribly. Then you get the hang of it and start knocking out levels. Some are easy and others are challenging. Then you get stuck and no more progress is made. Then it gets to a point where the payoff isn’t worth the effort anymore. Then you quit. You’ve gotten all you’re going to get from the time invested.

We drill it into our children as we had it drilled into us, “Don’t quit”. But the reality is that there is a time for every purpose under heaven and there is a time to quit. I was a boy scout, but am no longer. I trained in Korean Hapkido, but am no longer. There is a time to move from one thing to the next.

Seth Godin put it this way, “Winners quit all the time. They just quit the right stuff at the right time.”
